In May of 1971 the agency opened for business in a small office inside Center Isle Realty at 5 South Main St. with no policyholders but contracts with Aetna, Safeco, Hartford and Oregon Mutual courtesy of Koetje Agency of Oak Harbor being a 50% partner of Cecil Stuurmans. Production concentrated on commercial customers to build revenues needed to survive. In February of 1974 the agency moved to a portion of a new modular building placed at 7 South Main St. (now Fresh Flower Express) on a tenant occupied basis. In May of 1979 the agency moved to a new building at 103 South Main St. owned by Cecil Stuurmans and occupied solely by the insurance agency. In January of 1984 Cecil Stuurmans purchased the remaining 50% interests in the agency and became a sole proprietorship. In January of 1996 the agency incorporated as Stuurmans Insurance Inc. with Cecil & Kaye Stuurmans as the only stockholders. In October of 2003 80% of the agency stock was purchased by Jim Porter owner of Porter Whidbey Insurance located in Freeland and Scott Richards agency in Anacortes. The agency is active in writing Auto, Home, Health, Life and Commercial Insurance.
